Navigating Amateur Motocross – Episode 20
In this episode of the Coach Robb Podcast Network, presented by HBI Auto, Coach Robb and Derek Harris of HP Development connect the dots between physics, physiology, and race strategy for motocross, supercross, GNCC, and Vet riders.
They compare the human body to a motocross engine, especially in heat, humidity, and long race weekends, using examples from Central Florida summer races, Loretta Lynn’s Amateur National, Daytona, Gatorback, Mammoth, and even the “Energy Lab” at the Ironman World Championships in Kona.
The conversation breaks down how heat always robs power, regardless of brands, four-stroke/two-stroke, or an under-fueled, dehydrated rider dealing with adrenal fatigue, relative energy deficiency (RED-S), night sweats, sugar cravings, low libido, and irritability. They explain why riders must stop “fighting the laws of physics and physiology” by sprinting 20-minute motos like 4–5 minute qualifiers, abusing the clutch, panic revving off the limiter, and then blaming horsepower, the motor, or the fitness program when engines fail and lap times fall apart.
Coach Robb and Derek use Formula 1 shift lights, MotoGP data, dyno runs, and Garmin heart rate analytics (HR, HRV, Body Battery, resting heart rate) to show how over-revving, mis-shifting, and clutch abuse are the number one bike killers—and the perfect mirror of poor human performance habits.
They walk through a KTM engine autopsy with a blued clutch basket at 500°F, burned oil at 400°F, and rod bearing failure caused by excessive clutch slip, then parallel it to athletes who never truly train at 80%, 90%, and 100% of max, can’t dissipate heat, clear metabolic waste, or deliver enough sugar at race pace. Through drag race drills (85 vs 125 vs 250F), race-day simulations, VO2 and lactate-threshold workouts, precise heart rate zones, hydration, and calorie strategies, they prove that most amateurs don’t lose by lack of horsepower; they lose by bad habits, poor race craft, and misunderstanding energy systems over multi-day events.
The episode closes by stressing a healthy team environment between rider, parents, mechanic, and coach, teaching athletes to speak up when the bike or body feels wrong, and reminding listeners that this knowledge is their secret weapon in classes with 1,000+ riders chasing just 42 spots at Loretta’s.
