The Ricky & Robb Podcast Show – Ep. 19

Episode #The19 of the Ricky & Robb Podcast Show dives straight into one of the biggest debates surrounding Supercross, motocross and social media: who really owns the content, and does restricting race footage protect the sport or limit its growth? Ricky Johnson and Coach Robb look at both sides of the argument, from the millions of dollars required to produce a professional Supercross race to the enormous exposure created when fans, podcasts and social media accounts share clips online. The conversation even crosses into the music industry and Harry Styles, where thousands of fans record and share concert footage while ticket demand continues to explode. Is user-generated content stealing from the product, or has YouTube, Instagram and social media become one of the most powerful marketing tools in sports?

Then the conversation turns to the moment everyone is talking about: Haiden Deegan vs. Cooper Webb. Did Deegan intentionally take Webb out, was it simply aggressive racing, or did two completely different racing lines collide at exactly the wrong moment? Ricky gives his perspective as a former AMA Supercross and Motocross Champion, then reaches back into his own battles with David Bailey and Bob Hannah to explain something most fans never see. There is a point where aggression can help make a champion, but there is also a point where making too many enemies can cost you races, championships and money. Ricky shares the advice Jeff Spencer gave him that completely changed his approach to racing and explains why Deegan may eventually face the same decision: keep looking for fights or start playing the long game.

Finally, Ricky and Robb break down the SMX Championship battle, the incredible speed of today’s 250 and 450 riders, and why the mental game may ultimately decide who walks away with a title. Jorge Prado, Hunter Lawrence, Haiden Deegan, Cooper Webb, Ryder DiFrancesco, Levi Kitchen, Julien Beaumer, Chance Hymas and Jo Shimoda all enter the conversation as Ricky looks beyond raw speed and examines race craft, consistency, confidence, starts and the ability to perform under pressure. With championship points, fatigue, rivalries and a million-dollar payday hanging in the balance, one aggressive pass could change everything. And with the final round approaching, the biggest question may not be who is fastest, but who can keep their head when everything is on the line?
